Myra Schneider and myself are writing a sequel to Writing for Self-Discovery, which was published by Element in 1997.
The new book is called Writing Your Self and is, in many ways, more ambitious than the previous volume. Whereas the main focus of the first book was on writing techniques, although they make an appearance in the second (with completely new examples) the major space is given over to examining how writers have approached various life stages and conditions, such as childhood, identity, abuse, exile and displacement, death, and spirituality.
A unique feature of the text is the number of writers who have contributed mini-essays exploring how writing has helped them to come to terms with various life challenges. Amongst these writers are Penelope Shuttle, Pascale Petit, John Lyons, Grevel Lindop, Vicki Feaver, Linda Chase and Chris McCully. The book will be published by Continuum towards the end of 2009.
