cover of Writing Your Self Major forthcoming publication

A new creative writing text, written with Myra Schneider, will be published on 7th November by Continuum International. It is called Writing Your Self and will cost £16.99.

The book is a follow-up to Writing for Self Discovery published by Element in 1997, but this is a much more ambitious work. Two-thirds of the book is given over to an examination of personal writing of different kinds: for example, dealing with Childhood, Relationships, Addiction, Loss, Spirituality. This incorporates accounts by 21 writers, including Linda Chase, Vicki Feaver, Katherine Gallagher, Grevel Lindop, Pascale Petit and Penelope Shuttle, on how they have transformed personal material into finished works of art. The last third of the book explores techniques that can be used to access and shape material.

John Burnside has endorsed the book in the following words:

Our lives are as rich and as rewarding as the stories we tell ourselves and Writing Your Self is a valuable guide to making these stories as adventurous and as generous as we have it in us to be, both for our own sakes, and for the sake of the larger community of souls.
